A Message from the Board of Directors![]()
The Board of Directors of the Michigan Partnership to Prevent Gun Violence (MPPGV) is pleased to present Emerging Strategies: Gun Violence Prevention.
The MPPGV was created in October 1995 by professionals in the fields of law, medicine and public health for the development and implementation of ongoing collaborative initiatives to reduce the incidence of gun violence in Michigan.
As a first step in our planning for gun violence prevention in Michigan, the MPPGV conducted in-depth research into the incidence of gun violence in Michigan and across the nation and subsequently developed a set of strategic recommendations for gun violence prevention that reflected the then current state of understanding of the parameters of gun violence. These recommendations and the results of our research were published as the MPPGV Gun Violence Prevention Policy Recommendations Report, 1997 which was widely distributed to policy leaders and prevention advocates around the state.
Since 1997, as states and communities across our nation have searched for solutions to this tragic and preventable epidemic, much has been learned about gun violence prevention. Through that experience a variety of strategies have emerged with promise to point us to a safer future through common sense policy and practice initiatives that are supported by a solid majority of American voters.
It is our hope that Emerging Strategies: Gun Violence Prevention will assist policy leaders and community advocates to craft and enact effective gun violence prevention laws, policies and programs to stem the loss of life and loss of quality of life attributable to gun violence in Michigan and in our country.
We release this report with our continuing pledge to work together for gun violence prevention.
