METHODOLOGY
EPIC x MRA administered interviews with 600 registered voters in Michigan, October 16 - 20, 2000. Respondents for the interviews were selected utilizing an interval method of randomly selecting records of households containing registered voters with commercially listed telephone numbers in Michigan. The sample was stratified so that every area of the state is represented in the sample according to its contribution to the states total vote.
In interpreting survey results, all surveys are subject to error; that is, the results of the survey may differ from those which would have been obtained if the entire populations were interviewed. The size of the sampling error depends on the total number of respondents in the particular question. The table below represents the estimated sampling error for different percentage distributions of responses based on sample size.
For example, 50 percent of all 600 respondents said they would favor legislation requiring that all new handguns be manufactured with personalized technology (Question #34). As indicated in the chart below, this percentage would have a sampling error of plus or minus four percent. That means that with repeated sampling, it is very likely (95 times out of every 100), that the percentage for the entire population would fall between 46 percent and 54 percent, hence 50 percent ±4 percent.
